Plastic Free July: 5 things to do this month
We love July; long, hot days, ice-creams galore, school holidays and the very best thing… it’s plastic free month!
What is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps tackle the problem of plastic pollution. The aim is to support and inspire millions of people to be more conscious of their plastic consumption so that we can have cleaner streets and oceans.
How can I be involved?
There’s lots of ways in which you can support Plastic Free July, simple changes will make a big impact collectively. You can start small or really challenge yourself – it’s up to you. You can support Plastic Free July individually, as a household or even get your whole workplace involved!
Five ways to get started…
1. Refuse single-use take away cups
Can’t go without your morning latte? An easy place to make a difference is by investing in a travel cup. Carry it with you or leave it on your desk at work so that you always have an eco-friendly alternative to single-use cups.
2. Avoid pre-packaged fruit and vegetables
While it may be convenient, plastic packaging creates a huge amount of waste, which is damaging to the environment. Instead, look for loose groceries – you’ll often find these at markets and organic shops. You can also use plastic alternatives to keep food fresh, such as beeswax wraps.
3. Say no to plastic straws
This one is easy, simply say no! Plastic straws are unnecessary and damaging to the environment. For home use, stainless steel straws are a great, eco-friendly alternative – you can even carry one with you when you’re out and about.
4. No more plastic bags
This should be an obvious one – we’ve all heard about the damaging effect plastic bags are having on the planet – but it’s easy to forget or slip back into bad habits. It’s a good idea to keep reusable bags somewhere handy, such as in your car, at your desk at work or by the front door.
5. Plastic-free personal care
An area a lot of plastic is undoubtedly used is the bathroom; cotton wool, face wipes, razors, tooth brushes, floss… the list goes on. Take a look around your bathroom and see which plastic single-use items you can replace today. A simple switch to start with is bamboo cotton buds or why not try toothpaste tablets?
