How to have a hygge Halloween

Hygge is feeling you can’t buy. One of safety, warmth, peace, calm, contentment, and everything in between. This cosiness-based lifestyle is totally perfect for autumn as the days get shorter and the wind gets cooler, and all you want to do is snuggle up safely inside.

There are so many elements of Halloween that are synonymous with hygge, from the warm candles to the pumpkin spice. Since this year Halloween is going to look a little different as we’re temporarily separated from our loves, and lots of our usual October festivities like apple bobbing and trick-or-treating are cancelled for 2020, why not take the time love yourself a little more as you celebrate a hygge Halloween?

Let’s get started

Natural Candle – Champagne Pomelo

One of the cornerstones of hygge is lighting and candles are the perfect choice to bring some warm atmosphere into your home this Halloween. If you’ve got soy or plant wax candles, these are healthier for you and the planet than paraffin wax which is a non-renewable resource derived from petroleum or oil shale. And since it’s Halloween after all, why not pop them into your carved pumpkins!

If it’s cold enough, think about lighting up a fire if you have one, for the ultimate toasty glow. The most eco-friendly way to light a fire is to make sure your wood is ready to burn, with a moisture content of 20% or less, and avoid burning waste wood and household rubbish as these can emit damaging fumes.

Reed diffusers and fragranced oils are especially great for setting the mood too. You can make your own at home with essential oils, an old glass jar and reed sticks, or you can get plastic-free, sustainable fragrances from us at EcoVibe as well.

A festive feast

A warmed, spicy mulled wine or cider is a delicious way to start your hygge Halloween – not to mention, they smell amazing too! If you don’t drink alcohol, why not try a spiced apple juice or even a hot chocolate – with vegan cream, of course.

This year, try toasting chestnuts in your open fire, or in the oven if you don’t have a fire. Or even better, for the ultimate Halloween snack, upcycle the pumpkin seeds from your carved pumpkin and get toasting.

Wool Throw with Fringe

Keeping busy

Wrap up warm in your lumpiest jumper, grab a bunch of your cosiest blankets and get settled. If you’re on the market for a new eco-friendly blanket, we love this one by Respiin that’s been handmade from recycled wool clothing – uber snuggly!

If your spending the evening relaxing in your own company, pick up your favourite book or find your favourite scary film (Casper the Friendly Ghost or The Exorcist, there’s no judgement from us!) and get comfy.

If you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by family or housemates this year, why not dust off your old Cluedo board game or try running a murder mystery game at home.
