The clean finish advertised on petroleum-based cleaning products unfortunately doesn’t mean clean for the environment. There are numerous toxic chemicals found in these cleaning agents, which can very easily be avoided by making your own natural, diy cleaners at home. Check out the ones below for some green inspiration!
Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner
Natural cleaners are best when they are as few ingredients as possible, to reduce waste and resource use. We love this gorgeous smelling all-purpose cleaner for it’s basic recipe but powerful clean, using all natural ingredients. Hopefully, you should be able to find these around your home, but if not, they are very easy to get a hold of in the shops.
- An empty spray bottle
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- 2 drops of tea tree oil
- 3 drops lemon essential oil
Instructions:
All you need to do is combine all the ingredients in a clean bottle, close and shake carefully. This super simplistic cleaner only takes a few minutes to make, but it will need a little shake before each use to ensure that the ingredients don’t separate. Homemade Shower Cleaner
White vinegar is famous for it’s antibacterial and mould fighting properties, which is what makes this homemade shower cleaner an easy and effective natural cleaning solution. All you need for this one is three ingredients from your cupboards!
- An empty spray bottle
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- 3-5 drops of lemon essential oil
Instructions:
Carefully pour all these ingredients together into your bottle and shake. You’ll also need to do a little shake each time you use this one, as again, the ingredients will try to separate. But it’s easily fixed with a little shake each time you need to use it. Just spray on your shower and wipe with a microfibre cloth as needed.
Homemade Glass Cleaner
Getting clean glass is a tricky one – but not to fear, we’ve got the right natural solution for you. All you’ll need is the below and of course, a microfibre cloth on hand.
- An empty spray bottle
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- Microfibre cloth
Instructions:
Remember, less is more when it comes to the environment! We love this traditional but effective glass cleaner for it’s versatile properties. All you need to do is add the ingredients together, shake carefully and spray. Once you’ve done this, let it sit for one minute before wiping away with a microfibre cloth to reduce the risk of smudging.
Homemade Toilet Cleaner
Cleaning your toilet naturally is simpler than you think, all you need are two ingredients! Unfortunately, you need to put them both down as and when you’ll need them though as the reaction between them both happens instantly.
- Baking soda
- White vinegar spray
Instructions:
You’ll need to spray the inside of your toilet bowl with white vinegar, covering all areas until it’s completely wet. Then sprinkle baking soda all around the bowl on the wet surface, spraying more vinegar on top if you need the reaction to start fizzing a bit quicker. Remember, protect your eyes as always with cleaning! Wait a minute or two, then scrub around the toilet bowl thoroughly with a plastic-free toilet brush. Homemade Oven Cleaner
You need a more sturdy, natural solution to bring off the oil, grease and fats that come with cleaning the cooker! This one should do just the trick.
- Just under a quarter cup of Castile soap
- 1 cup of baking soda
- ½ a cup of coarse salt
- Warm water
- White vinegar (to rinse it off!).
Instructions:
This natural cleaner has a few more steps to it but is still brilliant at getting the job done. Firstly, combine the baking soda, salt, water, and castile soap to form a paste in a bowl. Apply a layer of this to the interior of the oven and let it sit overnight (make sure the oven is completely cool and off when you do this). Remember to remove it the following morning with a sponge (why not try our compostable sponges?). Finally, remember to spray with white vinegar to remove the last of the paste.
