1. Stay close to home
When thinking about your own personal impact on the planet, one way to help is to lower your carbon footprint, and the simplest way to cut back on emissions is to fly less often. Basically, the shorter the distance you travel from home, the lower your carbon footprint. Consider a “staycation” and explore your city or town to find hidden gems or get out and about and discover the countryside. Finding local adventures can be just as exciting and one of the greenest ways to holiday. If you do want to travel further, consider going by train and enjoy the journey.
2. Park the car…
As in, leave it at home and use more sustainable means of getting around. Walking tours are an excellent, fun and eco-friendly way of exploring a new city. Or considering hiring a bike; taking in the sights and getting some exercise is a win win – don’t forget your reusable water bottle to stay hydrated!
3. Don’t stop recycling!
Make sure to understand the local recycling rules and stick to them! If you’re staying in a hotel, you can ask at reception or even do your research ahead of time. If you’re camping follow the “no trace” rule, where the aim is to leave it as you find it; everything you carry in, you should carry out, which leads us on to…
4. Pack Consciously
Packing lightly is especially important if you’re flying as it helps reduce an aircraft’s carbon emission, however lightening the load is beneficial whatever your means of transport and makes it easier to get about. Pack multi-use clothes that you can wear several times for different occasions. Consider what you take too, biodegradable shampoos and toiletries with fewer chemicals can lessen your impact on the environment.
