It’s easy to think that the toilet tissue we use is environmentally friendly, they come from sustainable forests and are biodegradable, right? Well… Not really. The reality is, we’re consuming a lot faster than we produce. Paper production is a huge problem for the environment and a contributor to global warming. But toilet paper (for obvious reasons!) is pretty essential. If you’re looking for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly toilet paper, we’ve got your back.
1. Bamboo is Ultra Sustainable
Trees for toilet tissue need to be grown but they’re not growing fast enough to supply the demand. To increase the speed of this process, fertilisers and chemicals need to be used.
Bamboo, however, is the fastest-growing plant around. It’s actually a grass, and unlike trees, regenerates from its own roots, without needed any fertilisers or replanting. What’s more, as it grows bamboo absorbs up to 35% more carbon and produces 30% more oxygen than trees. As it grows around 30% faster than trees it is the most sustainable product on the paper market.
2. It’s 100% FSC Certified
The Cheeky Panda Company is the first (and so far, only) tissue brand in the UK to offer 100% FSC Certified products. This means that the bamboo forests they use for production have to be independently audited to meet the Forestry Stewardship Council’s 10 Principles and Criteria for Forest Management.
Choosing FSC Certified produces help avoid deforestation and protect rare animals and plants. FSC is the only wood certification scheme endorsed by major environmental charities including WWF, Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust.
3. Feeling Good
Bamboo fibres are longer and rounder, creating a naturally silky smooth and strong tissue, making it naturally less irritating than equivalent paper products. For those who have already swapped to recycled loo roll but had to sacrifice softness for principles, this is the perfect swap for you!
4. Lower Emissions
The manufacturers are also accredited by the Carbon Footprint Company, as they report the entire lifecycle of their products, each of which have a lower emissions footprint per sheet than non-bamboo equivalents. Per sheet, their bamboo toilet paper emissions is 31% lower than recycled toilet tissue and a massive 65.5% lower than non-recycled paper toilet tissue.
5. Carbon Balanced
These guys are partnered with the World Land Trust to help protect and rebuild the Khe Nuoc Trong rainforest in Vietnam. This will offset the 8.6tons of carbon produced per 10 tons of manufactured bamboo tissue products. Whilst their bamboo tissue generate 65% less carbon emissions than conventional tree-based tissue, this project ensures that the tissue is carbon neutral, at the same time as protecting the trees, plants, and animals of the rainforest.
