5 reasons to swap to Plastic-Free Toothpaste

If you look around your bathroom, you're going to see a whole lot of plastic packaging lurking there. In fact, bathroom waste accounts for up to 40% of landfill waste! Switching your toothpastes may not be top of your list when it comes to reducing your plastic, but it's a really important swap to make - especially as each tube takes an estimated 500 years to decompose! Here's five reasons we swapped to this toothpaste by Georganics.

1. Plastic-Free Packaging

Although toothpaste tubes are made from plastic, they’re very difficult to recycle and most councils won’t recycle them as part of their recycling scheme. With a standard toothpaste tube only lasting a person around two weeks, that’s a lot of non-recyclable plastic piling up!

This toothpaste comes in reusable and recyclable glass jars with an aluminium lid and compostable box. The packaging is specifically designed to produce no waste so we can avoid clogging up landfill sites. This way, we can take care of our dental hygiene safe in the knowledge we’re not harming the planet.

2. Natural (and Effective!) Ingredients

These toothpastes use only the best-quality, natural ingredients, all of which are organic and food grade and specially designed to promote remineralisation. Our favourite ingredient? Coconut Oil!

It’s a super effective plaque remover. In a 2015 study 'Effect of Coconut Oil in plaque-related gingivitis' oil pulling was shown to significantly decrease the plaque and gingival indices of the 30 day period. What’s more, a 2016 study by Journal of International Society of Preventive & Community Dentistry, showed that not only was Coconut Oil statistically significant in decreasing dental decay but it was equal to that of its synthetic opponent Chlorhexidine.

3. All Georganics’ Products are Cruelty-Free & Vegan

Sadly, lots of major toothpaste companies are not cruelty-free – we can’t believe this is still happening in 2019! For example, household favourite for many Aquafresh (of GlaxoSmithKline) still tests on animals, but tries to excuse it by stating that they provide animals food, water, and housing and attempt to minimize their pain and distress throughout the run of their experiments – this is shocking! Colgate (of Colgate-Palmolive) are also not a cruelty-free company. Although they state they are against animal testing, they choose to sell their products in China, which requires animal testing by law. But don’t worry, Georganics do not test on animals and are completely cruelty-free alternatives.

4. Easy to Use

Coming in a glass jar with a wooden spatula instead of a conventional squeezy tube, we totally get why some people might think that this toothpaste will be harder to use – but it’s not the case at all! Just put a pea-sized amount onto your toothbrush with your bamboo spatula, brush for two minutes and rinse well. See EcoVibe’s very own Anya testing her Georganics toothpaste below.

5. The Manufacturers are Great!

If you’re looking for a truly eco-friendly company, look no further than Georganics! The English manufacturer is based in the heart of the Sussex countryside where their products are handmade in small batches to ensure the highest quality is maintained across their lines. Where possible, they try to use ingredients that are sourced locally to avoid transport emissions and support other local businesses. They even protect our deliveries to EcoVibe HQ by using shredded cardboard from the packing their ingredients come in so they can make sure less waste is created throughout the entire production process.
