Why we love them
These durable, absorbent and compostable sponges make a great alternative to traditional synthetic sponges which are made of petrochemicals.
These sponges are great on bathroom surfaces and kitchen countertops, as well as dishes and everyday spills, so they’re absolutely perfect for cleaning all around the house.
Each sponge can absorb and retain up to 10x its own weight in water and can last through many tough cleaning jobs! They’re hygienic, durable, eco friendly, reusable and fully biodegradable, made from 100% cellulose which is natural wood fibre. That means these wonderful sponges are 100% plastic-free - no microplastics!
Most common kitchen sponges are made from plastic and can’t be recycled or composted. They’re usually only used for a couple of weeks to clean the kitchen and kitchen appliances before they’re thrown away, where they’ll contribute to plastic pollution for hundreds of years before eventually breaking down into microplastics.
What’s more, mass-produced synthetic sponges are all made with petroleum, bleach, assorted sulphates and a whole slew of nasty chemicals. Even after you throw old sponges away, the bacteria-killing triclosan they’re filled with negatively affects aquatic ecosystems, especially algae that other animals depend on.
But don’t worry, these cellulose sponges are a great alternative to chemical-filled plastic sponges! These sponges are made from wood fibres which are much more eco-friendly as they go through a less toxic manufacturing process and they are biodegradable too.
Looking after your sponge
- To help keep your cellulose sponge free of nasty bacteria, keep it as dry as possible between uses.
- You can sterilize them by soaking for a few minutes in boiled water, microwave heating damp sponges or pop in the dishwasher with a drying cycle.

Much, much, longer lasting than a plastic sponge. Also somehow much 'grippier' so I'm hardly using anything else (scourer, brush etc). Paired with the coconut scourers, you're covered for the washing up.
This is sold as a two pack, but they are twice the size of a standard supermarket plastic washing up sponge, so I've cut them in half.
Really nice..feels nice and does a great job..will be buying more.
I found this sponge really difficult to use. It’s too big for my hand to stretch round/hold and doesn’t quickly soften the way traditional dish sponges do, which means it’s tough to manoeuvre around your dishes, especially in a hurry. I have normal sized female hands. Using it for a week has left my hands and wrists achey and sore! (I’m in my 30s and don’t have any disabilities/problems with my hands/wrists) I really don’t understand why It’s the size it is. It’s bigger than a traditional sponge which is the right size to clutch. You just can’t clutch this in the same way. It’s taking me longer to wash my dishes with this and they are not as clean as I can’t manoeuvre the sponge around my dishes the way I usually would to ensure they are clean. I don’t normally leave reviews for things but I was so excited to use this, having felt guilty about sponge/landfill waste and having made an eco swap already with many of my other household items. I feel so bad about having to go back to traditional sponges now, but if this sponge was smaller and thicker, then I might not have to. On the plus side, it’s really soapy, so that has been a good thing.
Good quality, great to use, a great way to cut wasteful plastic out of your day to day life.
Love this sponge it’s solid and holds lots of water. Great to clean with. Very happy.
