What is Sustainability?

What is Sustainability?

We talk about sustainability a lot. But, have you ever wanted to ask "Hey EcoVibe, what even is sustainability?" We’re here to help!

Whether you’re a total sustainability guru or still thinking about making your first changes, it’s great to have a handy guide to the basics of sustainability.

We’re here to explain what sustainability means, how sustainable changes might affect your lifestyle, and how to start busting some sweet sustainable moves in your life.

What does ‘sustainability’ mean?

Sustainability is the practice of meeting our generation’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To put it simply, taking less from the planet so resources don’t run out. This means making an effort to reduce your carbon footprint, support ethical business practices, and give a little love back to the planet.

You’ll see loads of terms, recyclable, eco-friendly, compostable, biodegradable, and they all mean various things for sustainability. Our Green Guide is a great tool that we use across all of our products. We love helping you make smart choices when you’re treating yourself on our website, and we use stamps to help you quickly identify the great, sustainable qualities of our products.

We recently partnered with the team at Dirty What?, to help you be aware of all the harmful stuff in your everyday items. Their reviews of products are a great way to be well-informed about the stuff you buy. Plus they hold us to account too, as nobody is perfect!

How will sustainable changes affect my lifestyle?

One of the most talked-about aspects of becoming more sustainable is that it’s an expensive change compared to supermarket prices. But actually, it can be a lot cheaper over time.  The upfront cost of making sustainable changes is an investment. As time goes on though, you should actually save money! If you’re paying for refills, think about it as paying the same price each time for a bottled product, but for something better quality and better for the planet.

The sustainable glow-up is more than just in the mind - it’s in the body, too! Shopping sustainably can be great for your health. Using body products that are vegan, silicone and toxin-free, and without microplastics does wonders for your skin. And even switching to sustainable cleaning products can be less harmful to your lungs! Plus, eating more sustainably (by choosing vegetarian or vegan options, and avoiding palm oil) can mean eating more healthily.

Starting your sustainable lifestyle

A great early step to take on your ethical journey can be replacing everyday and home products that you use regularly. Eco-friendly alternatives can feel a bit intimidating at first, but getting started is as easy as swapping out a few products here and there. This way, it doesn’t feel overwhelming to be suddenly using products that use refills or need regular cleaning. If we all make small changes, together we can make a massive impact!

What swaps should I make?

With household cleaning products, plastics aren’t only in the packaging. Often, microscopic plastics are in the products themselves. It’s time to switch up your cleaning! We have a great bumper cleaning kit, which is an easy swap to lower your carbon footprint, and comes with gorgeous, refillable glass bottles!

Go vegan-ish (sometimes)

Plant-based products and diets are becoming way more popular and accessible. Why not start out by introducing Meat-free Monday? It’s a great way to support plant-based eating without committing to it as a full lifestyle choice!

Buy less

Try to view more purchases as investments. Everyone’s guilty of an impulse buy every now and then, but next time, try swapping out a basket of fast-fashion items for one sustainable piece of clothing that you really love!

Our eco shop locator is a great tool to find sustainable businesses. Shopping locally, reducing your carbon footprint, and not breaking the bank? You’re ticking all the sustainability boxes! Click below to support your local economy AND the planet - yep, you heard that right.
