The ultimate guide to plastic-free July

The ultimate guide to plastic-free July

Let’s kick-start July by doing some good for the planet. Here at EcoVibe, we’re taking part in the plastic-free July challenge; We’ll pledge to not consume plastic for the entire month of July. We’ll find it just as much of a challenge as you, trust us - No quick runs to get a plastic wrapped meal deal for lunch, for an entire month?  Eek!

Let’s face it, plastic consumption is quick and convenient, but it’s also super harmful to our environment. Ditching disposables doesn't just have a big positive impact on our planet, but it can also be really cost effective.

So, let’s do this together. Beginner to all things plastic-free? We got you. Here, we talk you through what plastic-free July is, how you can get involved, along with our favourite tips and everyday switches to make the transition as easy breezy as possible!

What is Plastic-Free July?

Plastic-free July  was founded by a small team in the local government in Western Australia, aiming to help people reduce their single-use plastic consumption and to shed light on just how much we actually consume.

Plastic-free July is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world! Millions of people across the globe take part in the campaign each year, committing to eliminate plastic from their lifestyle from as little as one day or the entire month of July.

How do I get involved?

Taking part in the challenge is easy, you can join 100+ million participants worldwide by signing up right here.

You have the option to sign up to avoid single-use packaging, target take away items, or dive in right at the deep end and completely ditch plastic. Remember, we value progress over perfection. Think the whole month might be a little ‘too’ much of a challenge? Don’t worry, you can take part for a day, a week, or the entire month to suit your lifestyle.

Plastic-free groceries

Visit your local market

Ever walk down the fresh fruit and veg aisle and realise just how much plastic packaging there is? A lot of fruit has its own natural packaging - We're literally unpacking oranges from a plastic net, then unpeeling their outer layer to finally reach the golden centre. So, why aren't we just buying them loose instead?

Heading to your local market will support local, and you can also get more bang for your buck. Buying loose produce will completely wipe out plastic packaging and you'll be able to buy only what you need, leading to less food waste. It's a win-win in our eyes. Top tip: Bring your own market bag or handy tote to steer clear of plastic bags.

Check out your local refill store

When in need of some other everyday essentials, be it restocking your pantry, grabbing toiletries, or refilling herbs - You can count on your local eco or refill store to provide plastic-free goods.

Don't know where to find one? You can check out our 'find my eco shop' tool. You can search to find your closest eco-friendly store, and you can even filter to find shops near you that stock EcoVibe products!

Plastic-free on-the-go

Always carry a water bottle

A lot of our plastic consumption comes from buying on-the-go. One of the best tips for Plastic-Free July, and beyond, is to always carry a reusable water bottle. If you run out of water whilst you're out you can get a refill from a local coffee shop. An added bonus, tap water is free!

Switch to reusable beeswax wraps

It's super convenient to buy a meal deal when out and about, but taking homemade snacks can save on money and waste. Introducing the ultimate lunchtime saviours. Ditch clingfilm and switch to reusable beeswax wraps. They keep food fresher for longer. Sandwiches, snacks, fruit…you can use these for all kinds of on-the-go cuisine. Plus, they can last up to an entire year when taken care of properly! See our blog for the ultimate  beeswax wrap guide.

Use Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags on Walks

If you’re a dog owner, you know that it’s a constant cycle of picking up poop. Each year, we throw away 730 plastic dog poop bags, per dog - That’s a lot of waste piling up. That’s why we decided to create 100% biodegradable and compostable poop bags that are made entirely out of plants, meaning that when they degrade no micro-plastics will be released into the earth.

Plastic-free self-care

Bars not plastic bottles

Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap.... these are all items that we lug home in plastic bottles on the regular. Have you ever thought about switching to a bar version? For example, shampoo bars are ultra concentrated, completely natural and can last up to 2 months! A plus? They take up a fraction of space that a bottle would in your shower.

Whether you've got thirsty hair in need of some deep conditioning, an ultra foamy shower gel for the ultimate body clean, or soap for sensitive hands... We've got all your needs covered. Check out our bar range below!

Makeup Remover Pads

A simple swap with a ton of benefits. Our pack of 16 reusable makeup pads are guaranteed to last you years, and save you some money along the way.

They’re made from sustainably sourced bamboo, which is antibacterial and hypoallergenic, meaning they’re great for those with sensitive skin and allergies. You can use them with water, cleanser or toner to help melt the day away, and simply pop them in the washing machine after use.

Some of the worst bathroom offenders are our toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes. Did you know that every plastic toothbrush that was ever made, still exists? Eek!
