5 reasons to swap to a Biodegradable Toilet Brush

We’ve just started stocking one of our easiest plastic-free swaps yet, our biodegradable toilet brush! And we’re really excited - we know, we’re not sure how we have friends either… Toilet brushes may not be glamorous, but they are an essential bathroom cleaning item and something we frequently replace. And, this isn’t just any toilet brush, it’s biodegradable and made from natural, renewable materials. Read on to find out 5 reasons we love it so much.

1. It’s completely plastic free

Did you know, ordinary plastic toilet brushes have small toxic hairs which will end up in the ocean and in the environment for hundreds of years? Not only is this obviously dangerous for our ocean wildlife but could also be harmful to humans through the marine food web.

Our new toilet brush however is 100% plastic free! In fact, the bristles on this brush are completely plant-based, made from natural coir from coconut fibre and tampico from the agave cactus, with a locally-grown beech wood handle.

2. It’s biodegradable and compostable

One of the key problems with buying plastics is that they’re made with non-renewable materials, wasting so much of our planet’s precious resources. On top of that, toilet brushes aren’t even be recycled at their end of use either.

While our plastic free toilet brush is super durable and will last you for ages, at its end of life its completely biodegradable and compostable. This means you’ll be able to save countless plastic toilet brushes from landfill. Instead, the brush will biodegrade naturally, just like a twig or any other plant material. The toilet brush also comes with a vintage metal holder which can be reused as a flower planter or for your next toilet brush sans holder.

3. It’s FSC certified

Wood is a fab material to use for loads of reasons, including that it only needs sunlight and rainfall to grow, meaning it uses much less energy than, for example, plastic or metal. But unfortunately, cutting down trees in a forest for timber is one of the leading causes of deforestation. But don’t worry, this toilet brush is 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified, meaning the wood come from forests that are managed responsibly.

The Forest Stewardship Council require that the beech trees harvested to make this product are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally, which helps protect avoid deforestation and protect rare animals and plants. FSC is the only wood certification scheme endorsed by major environmental charities including WWF, Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust.

4. It’s made in Germany

By a small family company! Most plastic products like toilet brushes are made far overseas in places like China, generating a huge carbon footprint in shipping. By choosing a product which is made so much closer to home, you will massively help reduce our global footprint. On top if this, we even offset the carbon generated from our delivery to you by planting trees to help minimise our CO2 emissions.

5. It’s an easy swap that won’t impact your life

Once you see plastic you can’t un-see it, when the light bulb goes ‘ting’ and you want to stop using it so much, the challenge really begins. This usually means that you have to change up your habits and even small changes can take a little getting used to.

But switching to a biodegradable toilet brush really is one of those plastic-free swaps which takes absolutely no effort. Once you’ve made this one single step, you can prevent countless dangerous plastic hairs entering our water ways and long-term will stop so many non-biodegradable lumps of plastic going into landfill – yay!
